Communication played a vital role in
mobilising the world to help after the
2004 tsunami. Now the challenge is to
maintain aid and use the power of
communication to raise awareness and
funds for disaster prevention. As a leading
global communication and public affairs
consultancy, APCO Worldwide is proud
to support this truly important cause.
The Federal Public Service for Health,
Food Chain safety and Environment is a

a safe food chain and to protect the
environment. Only collaboration with
well-trained and motivated people can
ensure a transparant and science-based
policy needed both today and in the
future.
Enhancing the innovative strength of our
country, creating sustainable employment
and improving the quality of education
– these are the aims of the German
Federal Ministry of Education and
Research. We want to promote new
markets with innovative technologies
and to conduct research for the people.
Our people are the most important
resource for the future of our country.
It is important to promote talent and to
realize equal opportunities.
Local level solutions to disaster risks Denmark is helping local communities
to return to a normal life after the 26
December 2004 tsunami. At an international
workshop in Copenhagen in
November 2005, international experts
and experts from six countries around
the Indian Ocean discussed better ways
to reduce risks to coastal communities.
It is my hope that ideas and conclusions
from the workshop will be used actively
in future disaster preparedness.
We believe that every child matters.
When natural disasters threaten, effective
partnerships and the sharing of crucial
knowledge can unite the world
community to curtail the aftermath on
the vulnerable. Early warning systems,
global communication and, most
importantly, lifelong education play their
part in reducing the impact of nature’s
worst excesses on humanity.
Impact sets out to promote high-quality,
well organised, post-disaster psychosocial
care. Although most people affected are
resilient, and will recover on their own
or with the support of family and friends,
some 20 to 25% will suffer long term
health consequences and will need
professional help. Impact strives to
provide this essential level of care.
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic
Commission of UNESCO provides a
variety of ocean services to its 133 members
states. Among these, the Tsunami
Warning System of the Pacific Ocean,
ITSU established in 1965, provides timely
warnings for distant and regional
tsunamis and contributes to local warning
and community based preparedness
programs.
The Norwegian Ministry of Health and
Care Services work to maintain a high level
of preparedness and provide health and
care services whether major catastrophes
occur at home or abroad. Close collaboration
with the Nordic countries, the
European Union and the World Health
Organisation is essential to achieve this
goal.
The International Centre for Geohazards
(ICG), hosted by the Norwegian Geotechnical
Institute (NGI), is a Centre of
Excellence established by the Research
Council of Norway. ICG does research
on identification, assessment and
mitigation of the risk to individuals,
society and the environment due to
geohazards such as landslides, rock slides,
earthquakes and tsunamis.
