Dominican Republic - Due to its location in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is prone to hurricane-force winds on a yearly basis. In September 1998, Hurricane Georges battered the island nation with 200 km/hour winds. The health sector alone suffered more than US$22 million in damage, including to health facilities that were unable to continue providing much needed services.
