Pisco, Peru -
5 August 2007. In just two minutes, the city of Pisco,
Peru lost 97% of its hospital beds to a MW 8.0
earthquake. Although the San Juan de Dios Hospital
was one of the health facilities that sustained the
most damage, a recently retrofitted wing of the
hospital withstood the force of the quake, providing
much needed space for the treatment of the
hundreds of people injured, and proving once again
that retrofitting health facilities is a wise investment.
