With fertile fishing grounds along a 900-km coastline, small-scale fishing is carried out with small sailing boats. Nowadays this environmental fishing is becoming commercialised. Fishermen from Senegal, Ghana and other West African countries are competing (with motor boats) for moorish master mariners. Industrial fishing is carried out by foreign vessels with deep sea species captured by trawlers from Russia, the Netherlands and Latvia.
